NAVAPD President Joseph Abate, D.M.D.

Dr. Joseph Abate is a Supervisory Dentist at the Miami VA Healthcare System’s Broward Outpatient Clinic. His scope of duties there includes all phases of General Dentistry including Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Restorative Dentistry, identifying and managing mild to serious, acute to chronic medically compromised patients, performing simple and complex full mouth extractions, and pre-prosthetic surgery.

He served as Speaker Elect of the Medical Staff at Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center and was a voting member of the Executive Board for Clinical Affairs, Credentialing and Peer Review Committees.

In addition to his work for the VA and his service in the U.S. Army Reserve, Dr. Abate also volunteered his time and services at “Children’s Health Day”, “Operation Stand Down”, “Children’s Health Week/Operation Smile”, as well as with the Chinese Community Health Center and AIDS Action Committee in Boston, MA. He also provided dental care to indigent and homeless patients, as well as those patients in their nationally recognized substance abuse recovery program, at the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Dr. Abate has published numerous papers and delivered many talks.

Prior to joining the VA, Abate was in private practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He earned his D.M.D. at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and did his residency at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He earned his B.A. in biology at SUNY Buffalo.
