Message from the President, Dr. Samuel V. Spagnolo; May 2020

In just 60 days, the world has changed so much.  The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we interact with one another, and the way we treat our patients.

Here at NAVAPD, we are in close contact with our colleagues in Congress – particularly the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Committees – as they put together additional relief packages.  Right now, we are advocating for hazard pay, and we continue to talk with them about safety guidelines and other measures that are important to our field.

In this issue of our newsletter – which we are sending only by email to be mindful of resources and safety – we cover the work we’re doing with Congress on COVID-19 relief, as well as other legislative issues still to be voted on.

Washington, DC is a ghost town.  At the time of this writing, the Senate plans to come back into session in person, but the U.S. House doesn’t feel it’s safe.  Congressional staff (and much of the federal and local governments and private sector) are working from home.  The streets are empty, but the work is still being done.  In addition to COVID-19 relief packages, congressional staff are working on Fiscal Year 2021 appropriations, as well as other issues and policies that keep the government running and serving constituents.

Our team is working from home so that they can stay safe and healthy.  But we’re working hard to serve you, our members, and ensure your safety and well-being on the job.

I hope you, your family, and your friends and loved ones are healthy and safe.  We are thinking about you all, and are grateful for your service to our nation’s veterans.

If you have any concerns about practices or policies in your medical center that you need us to weigh in on on your behalf here in Washington, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.  You can reach me directly at presnavapd@gmail.com.  We want to make sure we’re serving you in the best and most effective way possible.

Stay safe and stay well.
